What can humanity learn from the world's most challenging environments? The destinations change but the curiosity remains constant.

Traverse uses difficult, remote and culturally significant landscapes as living laboratories for medicine, human adaptation, resilience, wellbeing, environmental science, traditional knowledge, leadership and One Health.

The expedition journey is the vehicle. The legacy is the purpose.

Originator of the modern concept of extreme medicine and founder of World Extreme Medicine, Mark has spent four decades in remote, austere and high-risk environments, training more than 20,000 clinicians across 40+ nations and, through WEMfund, helping deliver frontline trauma care alongside medics in eastern Ukraine. World Extreme Medicine is the credibility engine behind Traverse; Traverse takes that knowledge into the field.

Professor Alexandre Soares Rosado Environmental Science and Engineering

Professor Rosado is a microbial ecologist and Professor of Bioscience at KAUST, where he leads interdisciplinary research on microbial diversity, microbiome-based technologies and extremophiles. His work bridges classical microbiology and multiomics to develop microbial solutions for ecosystem restoration, human and planetary health, biotechnology and astrobiological applications.

Dr. Fabien Schultz Ethnopharmacology and Zoopharmacognosy

Research Group Head · Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine

Dr. Fabien Schultz is an ethnopharmacologist and explorer working at the intersection of traditional knowledge, animal self-medication, biodiversity and drug discovery. He leads the Ethnopharmacology & Zoopharmacognosy Research Group at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, investigating how humans and wild animals use natural substances and translating those insights into potential therapeutics. His work with chimpanzees, elephants and mountain gorillas has earned a Fulbright Scholarship, two Explorers Club Flag Expeditions and the Explorers Club EC50 award.
